WHEN CAN I SCHEDULE A ROAD TEST?

Once the RMV has received your certificate and 6 months have passed since you got your permit, you may take the road test.

HOW CAN I SCHEDULE A ROAD TEST?

We highly recommend that you take the road test with us. 95% of our students choose to take the road with us, and 95% pass the test their first time. There are many benefits of taking the test with us. We take care of all the logistical problems for you. We will register you for the test and provide the car that complies with the RMV requirements. You will be driving the same car that you used during your driving lessons, and you will be familiar with the area, since it is the same area where you have practiced with your driving instructor.

If you choose not to take the test with us, then, you will have to call the RMV and schedule your own appointment. You will also have to provide a car that complies with the RMV requirements, and you may have to drive in an unfamiliar area.

Whether or not you take the test with us, the RMV will charge you $85 for your license.

You must prepay your picture license fees to the MassDOT at least 48 hours before your Massachusetts driver's license test. To pay, please use ONLINE LINK. Pay My Road Test and/or License Fees online transaction.

Fees include: $35 for license application and $50 for 5-year picture license

COMMON REASONS FOR FAILING A ROAD TEST?
  • You were at fault in an accident with another motor vehicle, pedestrian, or object.
  • You were driving in a way that may have caused an accident or in a way the examiner considered dangerous.
  • You violated a motor vehicle law, rule, or regulation.
  • You demonstrated a lack of experience safely operating a motor vehicle.
  • You refused to follow or drove contrary to the examiner's instructions.
PASSED THE TEST?!

If you pass the road test and have prepaid for your license, the examiner will stamp the back of your learner's permit and it will become a temporary license, valid up to 30 days. The RMV will manufacture your new, permanent photo-image license and mail it to you. If you pass the road test and have not prepaid for your license, you must take the permit with the road test results indicated on the back to an RMV branch within 30 days. You must then pay for and obtain a temporary license while your permanent license is being manufactured. (Note: If you do not obtain a temporary license within 30 days of passing your road test, you may be required to retake the road test at your expense.) If your permanent license does not arrive in the mail within four weeks of issuance of your temporary license, please call the RMV Phone Center.

Yes, we recommend that you have driven with your parents for at least 15-20 hours before starting to drive with your instructor. Please, record your driving hours with your parents on the Student Log Handout, which is available in our office.
